Clubs and pubs not your thing? These nighttime outings give visitors a peek into what the locals are doing after dark as well as a taste of Prague’s quirkier cultural offerings.
The Best of Prague at Night
Royal Café Theatre
This newly opened Vinohrady theater was recently restored to all of its original 1920s glamour, and aside from a cinema houses a red-velvet bar-café and a small exhibition devoted to film in First Republic Czechoslovakia. More of a dinner theater than a movie house, the recent line-up has included Charlie Chaplin films with live piano accompaniment, a screening of Amélie with wine, cheese, and chanson, and ongoing Czech film series with English subtitles.

It’s been over 20 years since Bill Clinton tore it up on sax at the Reduta Jazz Club, Prague’s oldest jazz venue. Since then numerous joints for jazz lovers have popped up—one especially beloved by locals is Jazz Dock, a floating club on the left bank of the Vltava with fantastic views of Prague by night. Local and international acts entertain while patrons can enjoy tapas, burgers, light bites, and cocktails that go down almost as smoothly as the music.

Prague ZOO by night
The Prague ZOO is one of the finest in Europe and certainly gets our vote for fun family attraction by day—we highly recommend the valley of the elephants, Indonesian jungle, endangered Komodo dragons, and a ride on the mini-train. For something entirely different, try a nighttime tour of the zoo by flashlight. Night tours take place every Friday and Saturday throughout August, September, December, and January, though private tours can be arranged any time of year. Contact the zoo for details.

Absinthe Tasting at Hemingway Bar
The Czech Republic has a longstanding absinthe tradition, but these days it can be difficult to find the real deal. We suggest that you avoid any establishment that offers flaming green shots! For a more authentic experience, turn to sleek cocktail lounge Hemingway Bar where you can sample craft Czech absinthe from a beautiful old-fashioned fountain, with a knowledgeable English-speaking bartender on hand to walk you through the experience.

Swing Dance Nights at Jam Café
The city of Prague is currently in the grips of swing fever with young Czechs lining up to learn the Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie, and Shag. Leading the charge is the Groovy Cats Swing Dance Club, which organizes weekly swing parties at venues around Prague, including a popular swing night every Monday night (9 pm) at Jam Café.
